Abstract 
 
This applied study was conducted, in order to determine the impact of teaching the 
 
mother and child health program to Shendi University students, in the period February 
 
2012 to July 2014 in Shendi, River Nile, Sudan. 
 
 Study objectives: 
 
To assess: 
 
1- The knowledge of Shendi University students toward mother and child health. 
 
2- The benefit of mother &child health program on student’s health knowledge. 
 
Study methodology: 
 
Sample: 	multi-stage 	sample 	of 	188 	students. 	 	Data 	collection 	method 	: 	data 	were 
 
collected through a questionnaire which included, the importance of maternal and child 
 
health, 	some 	information 	of 	anatomy 	& 	physiology 	of 	the 	reproductive 	system, 
 
adolescent 	health, 	health 	care 	before 	marriage, 	maternal 	care 	before 	and 	during 
 
pregnancy and childbirth, Breastfeeding, child care, and family planning. 
 
Results:  
 
The study showed that most students age group between 20-25 years, belong to 
 
rural families that contain 5-10 member, 13% of them are married, 7% of student are 
 
male while 93% of them are female. 
 
The study also showed, that student's information (prior to teaching),  Excellent 
 
regarding the child right in breastfeeding and vaccination, Ranging between acceptable 
 
and satisfactory for the anatomy and physiology of the reproductive system, adolescent 
 
health, premarital health care , pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, family planning, 
 
and child health. 
 
Conclusion &recommendations: 
 
After 	teaching 	the 	maternal 	and 	child 	health 	 	program 	to 	Shendi 	University 
 
students, their health knowledge increased in all topics that covered by the implemented 
 
program. With p-value less than (0.05) 
The researcher recommended that; A mother and child health course to be included 
 
in 	all 	graduates 	curricula, 	recommendations 	addressed 	to 	the 	Ministry 	of 	higher 
 
education, and the curriculum Committee of Shendi University. |
